How to make a India passport / oci photo

  1. 1

    Use a plain white background

OCI applications are strict about this. A grey tint, a visible gradient, or a shadow behind your head is a common cause of resubmission.

  2. 2

Avoid white or very pale clothing

Against a white background it makes your shoulders disappear, so the outline of your head and body cannot be distinguished.

  3. 3

    Upload and crop to square

This catches people who prepared a photo for a US or European application. A rectangular photo cropped square usually leaves the head badly positioned.

  4. 4

    Compress before uploading

If the portal rejects your file for size, reduce the file size rather than the pixel dimensions — shrinking the image instead will fail the resolution check.

Frequently asked questions

What size is a India Passport / OCI photo?
A India Passport / OCI photo must be 51×51 mm (2×2 in), rendered at 600×600 px and 300 DPI.
Why does the OCI portal reject my photo for file size?
It enforces a maximum upload size. Use the compress tool to bring the file under the cap while keeping the pixel dimensions intact — reducing the dimensions instead trades one rejection for another.
Is the photo the same for a passport and an OCI card?
Both use a square photo with a plain white background, but the OCI portal is stricter about background uniformity and enforces its own file-size limit. A photo that satisfies OCI will generally satisfy Passport Seva.
Can I wear spectacles?
Plain spectacles are acceptable if your eyes are clearly visible with no reflection. Tinted lenses and heavy frames are not.
Can I scan a printed photo instead?
Avoid it. Scanning introduces a colour cast and paper texture that often reads as a non-uniform background. Upload the original digital file.
