Whiten Passport Photo Background
Clean a light or off-white ID-photo background to a pure, even white.
Your photo is processed entirely in your browser and is never uploaded to a server.
When you need this
Your wall photographed grey instead of white
A white wall in ordinary indoor light usually records as light grey or faintly blue, because cameras balance for the overall scene. Authorities that require a white background frequently reject these.
Uneven lighting left one side darker
Light from a single window falls off across the wall, producing a gradient that reads as 'not plain'. Evening it out is often the difference between acceptance and a resubmission.
You need white but shot on cream
Useful when preparing for a country that wants white after taking the photo against the light grey some other authorities prefer.
How to do it properly
- 1
Check whether your document allows it
This matters. The US Department of State prohibits digital alteration of passport photos, and the US passport tool therefore does not offer background replacement. Use this utility for documents that permit it, or to clean up a photo for non-passport purposes.
- 2
Upload and choose the target colour
White for most passport and visa applications; light blue for some ID cards and older specifications.
- 3
Inspect the edges of the hair
This is where background work shows. If you see a halo or hard cut-outs around loose strands, reshoot against a plainer wall instead — a visibly edited background is worse than a slightly grey one.
If something goes wrong
Can I use this for a US passport photo?
No. The State Department does not permit digitally altered photos, which is why the US passport tool crops and resizes only. Photograph against a genuinely white or off-white wall instead.
There is a halo around my hair
The contrast between hair and background was too low to separate cleanly. Reshoot against a plainer, more evenly lit wall — no automatic tool separates fine strands from a similar-toned background reliably.
My shirt disappeared into the background
Light clothing against a white background leaves no visible shoulder line, which many authorities reject. Wear something dark and contrasting.

Frequently asked questions
- Will this remove any background like an AI tool?
- No — this whitens light backgrounds to pure white. It works best on photos already taken against a plain, light wall. It is not an AI subject cut-out.
- How do I avoid eating the edges of the face/hair?
- Increase the threshold (move the slider right). A higher threshold only whitens the very lightest pixels, protecting the subject.
- Is my photo uploaded?
- No. All processing happens in your browser; the image never leaves your device.
