When you need this

How to do it properly

Black or dark blue on unlined white paper photographs far better than pencil, ballpoint on lined paper, or anything on a coloured pad.

Straight down, no shadow across the page. A shadow becomes a grey band that survives cleaning and looks like a smudge.

Crop close to the signature itself, clean the background to white, and set the pixel dimensions and file-size cap the form specifies.

If something goes wrong

My signature looks faded after cleaning

The ink was too light to separate from the paper. Re-sign with a darker pen — a fine-liner or gel pen scans much better than a ballpoint.

The form rejects my file size

Signatures compress very well because they are mostly flat white. If yours is large, it is probably still at full camera resolution — resize the dimensions down first.

Should the background be transparent?
